No, those beasts, at that time, were made by the Rootes Group which were
bought out by Chrysler about 2 years later. Rootes made the Sunbeam,
Hillman, Singer and Humber. Chrysler imported American technology into
manufacturing, which drove them into dust about 1970 because the
reliability went down the hill. In 1960, I ran a Hillman Minx which had
a tamed down version of the Alpine engine with a single carb. In 1965 (I
think) I bought a Hillman Super Minx GT Station Wagon. It had a
souped-up Alpine engine with 4 NSU carbs, oversize valves and a 10.5:1
compression ratio. If my memory is good, it developed 150 BHP which
wasn't bad for a 1600 cc motor of those days. Having a station wagon
gearbox with wide ratios and a low back axle ratio, you had to be
careful on acceleration: at the lights, it would beat anything on 4
wheels for the first 500 m. Those were the days. The worst car the
Rootes Group produced was the Hillman and Sunbeam Imp. It was supposed
to be the replique of the Mini, but it really was a horror, with a rear
diecast engine and bodywork that rusted while it was still a photo in
the brochure.
