Must be that Mediterranean dictionary Brian,
Mine gives this:
ac·ro·nym:
A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's
Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words,
such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

DVD and CD are NOT acronyms, they are abbreviations. An acronym is an
abbreviation which you pronounce as a word. WiFi is an acronym if you
pronounce it as 'wyefye', rather than spell out the letters.
