Yeah, here in the US they charge you a recycling fee whenever you buy a new battery, and you get it back when you turn in the old one, so frankly, Ive never seen an old car battery on the side of the road.

Wish it was practical or that they could do it for other trash though!

Try the UK then, there are old car batteries on most street corners ;-)
Well, maybe jnot that often, but they are often abandoned because someone is too lazy to take them to a recycling centre.

Any dealers I have dealt with do not take them back.

Phil:
No flame here, but I am confused about where you live. I am also
confused about what the subject of the message is; your "they" and
"them" leave me confused. Are you talking about cars or car batteries?

To be honest, I almost never see cars abandoned on the side of the road.
Primarily because there is value even in a totally inoperable car. Been
to a "Pick & Pull" lately? I have a 1953 Chevy pickup truck so I
occassionally will visit a nearby Pick & Pull to see if there is
anything I could use. They will take any car, any make, model or
vintage, because there are always parts to scavenge from any car, before
it is finally hauled off to the crusher.

So, any car left alongside the road will soon be picked up and hauled
off to be scavenged. If you have an old clunker that just won't run
anymore, call the local junkyard - I think the going rate is about
$50.00 for it, regardless of the condition.

Regarding car batteries, do you really find car batteries abandoned in
parking lots and alongside hiways? I can not recall ever seeing an
abandoned car battery. Don't the car parts dealers in your area impose a
core charge when you buy a new battery that you then get back when you
bring in the old one? Everyone that sells batteries takes back the old
ones so I don't understand the business of having to takle them to
recycling centers. What recycling centers?

I really don't see this as a problem. Maybe it's just the neighborhood
you live in.
