Yes we have a customer that can claim the Pb exemption and they have
developed what they are calling the RoHS 5 compliance plan. I have to
admit, it hadn't dawned on me until I heard about RoHS 5 that they still had
to comply with the other substances. I knew they could fall under the Pb
exemption, so I guess in my mind I had figured it meant they were totally
exempt from the directive. But it makes sense that they would still have to
meet the other substance restrictions, which is not nearly as difficult to
tackle.
However, we are still trying to switch most of the components over to Pb
free for supply issues. We are at this point just planning to leave the
board finish and the solder as containing Pb.

Almost correct.............

five / six compliance (5/6) is open to those companies that have an
exemption under the act. In this case it is the lead in solders for
telecommunications and network equipment.

So what they are saying is that they are taking the lead in solders
exemption for their class of equipment which is covered under the exemptions
for lead in solders in telecomms and network infrastructure, but that they
are complying with the other 5 compounds covered under RoHS.

You cannot "choose" which one you can be exempt from but you can "choose" to
claim the various exemptions if your class of equipment is covered under
them.

Hope that makes sense, if not call me on my mobile.

Subject: [LF] Has anyone heard of this concept

I've just had a very interesting conversation. A fairly senior person at
Nortel working in the Wireless Bay Station Products group made the statement
to a Director in the company I work for that the Wireless Bay Station
Products group were not pursuing lead free compliance as they were going
with the " 5 out of 6 exemption". When asked about this the Nortel manager
stated that as long as they were compliant with 5 of the 6 restricted
substances they didn't have to be compliant with the 6th and that they chose
the 6th to be Lead.
Now my collegue wants to know why our company needs to be compliant if
Nortel doesn't.
I went through my standard explanation. However, now I'm curious, I would
like to know if anyone else in the forum has ever heard of this "5 out of 6
exemption". I know there are some fairly active Nortel participants in the
forum. Your take please.
