James,

Have you or would you ever consider making your estimate tool available to others in some form such as shareware for us less experienced designers to use?

I understand if you're not willing or able for whatever reason you may have.

Thanks,

Gary,

I would still need the X and Y dimensions of the PCB.

If unknown... I could make a guess - but as you know, the smaller the PCB -
the more difficult it becomes.

Also - I only need the Number of Pads used in Patterns. You have given me a
Total number of Pads... which would include Vias. This tends to
over-estimate the time required for a job.

Using a PCB of 10" x 10" (Hey! I had to plug in SOMEthing!!) I get about 4.3
weeks - with an assumption of 5000 Pins for Patterns. (I guessed that the
other 6958 were vias).

The Schematic was estimated at about 15 Days. (That's in addition to the PCB
estimate - not included with the PCB layout estimate of 4.3 weeks.)

Again... if provided with the proper info - I can pretty much give a good
estimate. Otherwise - it's just a guess.

Regards,

James Jackson

Gary,

The original post contained enough information to give a quote on time.

I looked at your information... and did not have enough meaningful
information to give you a comparison of what the numbers would be for
your
particular design - which is different from the original posters'.

I would need -

X Dim - of PCB
Y Dim - of PCB

Number of Pins

SMT, TH or Both

>From that, I can give you an estimate.

The estimates that I give include creating components/Patterns, all the
way
through generating Gerbers and Post-processor Drill Drawings.
(Basically, a
deliverable package)

Are you estimating this using what software?
One example of design we did was 2700 nets, 3071 comp
4 plane, 4 signals, .08 density and it was about 3 weeks from start to
finish using pads-layout version 2005sp2

I agree with James estimate ...
It sounds to me like a 3 to 4 month job for a single layout person to
do.
The only way to get a faster delivery would be to have multiple shifts
and/or concurrent designing.

Good luck with the project.

Gary,

I'm not sure what others will reply to this... but my estimate would be
about 620 Hours to do this board.

I realize that may seem like an enormous amount of time... even with
using
an Auto-Router... but that's what my PCB Layout Calculator crunched out
for
me.

It is a very dense board, and has a lot of 'restrictions'.

By the way... I have NO idea if this is 'standard' in the 'industry'.
I'm
sure you'll get some hot-shot to quote 2 weeks... but I'd be wary of
anything like that.

Since we are a 'captive shop' here at Micron, we have only a very shaky
frame of reference with which to judge how our work compares with other
layout designers. One of our designers was worried that we (and
himself, specifically) might be falling behind what might be considered
'standard' in the industry. I was hoping some of you might respond with
the man-hour estimate you might quote for the following board:

2800 components; top & bot placement allowed, few placement restrictions
~20,000 pads/pins, 95% SMT
Usable area: 130 in2
Routing layers: 8 internal routing, top&bottom
Plane layers: 10 power/gnd planes; 6 voltages distributed on split
planes
Trace/space: 4/6 mil
Via drill/pad: 10/20 mil
4200 nets; ~80% involve matched lengths and/or differential routing
Major components: 1020 ball 1mm BGA, 1508 ball 1mm BGA, 1072 ball 1.27mm
BGA, 2x SODIMM sockets, 12 HD connectors
All digital; no analog

A full-feature SPECCTRA router is available.

Thanks
