Hi Technetters,

We have a chip resistor that is open but will work again when pressing
down on top of it. A cross-section was taken and a crack is clearly
seen between the silver plating and the nickel barrier. (I have photos
if anyone is interested).

What would cause this plating separation?

Secondly, the separation occurs only on the top of the resistor and
doesn't hook around to the vertical sides where there is a good solder
connection. If there is still a good connection to the silver layer,
why would a separation to the nickel layer cause an open?

Thanks,
Ryan Grant
