We went through some of this same BGA process development within the last 2
years and we still don't have x-ray capability in house... But I think it is
being looked at for this year sometime... driven by volume.

In the mean time we have used Mini Micro in San Marcos, CA for verification
of our BGA soldering... through the inspection of lot samples.

That might be an option for you in the development stage...

Blair,
To use a quote from a famous friend of our's for something other than a
cleaning question is X-static. It depends.
You have to understand your ability to make assessments from things you can
see for the things you can't. That said, you will end up with a combination
of verification schemes that range from visual to AOI, AXI, Ersa-scope, ICT,
Flying Probe, Functional Test, J-Tag and Boundary scan. Physical limitations
due to part design or access to probe pads or test points will help
determine your best strategies for a comprehensive test plan that will meet
your customer and cost targets.
Speaking of Doug Pauls, he was recently the recipient of a prestigious
Engineering award. It hasn't gone to head though and he told us that his
friends can still call him Sir Doug.

Subject: [TN] Kicking and Screaming

Happy Friday, Technetters!

OK, now that I've gotten your attention, our Engineering folks have been
trying to drag the manufacturing folks (kicking and screaming) into the 21st
century (or maybe even just the 20th century) in terms of manufacturing
capabilities. We are a low volume high mix OEM, with limited SMT
capabilities. The R&D guys want to use the more sophisticated stuff, but the
old equipment we have just isn't up to the task. We struggle with 208pin
QFPs and other high density devices. They would like to use smaller
components, and possibly even BGAs.

I know for smaller components we would have to upgrade to a better pick and
place machine with more accurate component placement. But for BGAs, the
existing machine may be able to place them, but currently we have no way to
tell how well it worked, other than whether it passed or failed functional
test.

I've seen the "look-under" BGA inspection equipment, but I believe that we
would probably need the X-ray machine to do the job. I've also heard that
our old reflow oven may not even do a good job at reflowing BGAs.

Is X-ray inspection necessary? And will any old reflow oven solder a BGA?

Thanks,

Blair
