Ryan's comments are generally correct, but 3 oz copper does represent a
special case. Using 3 oz copper is fairly uncommon, so you might find fewer
fabricators who can do this. With fewer suppliers available, pricing may be
less competitive.

You might also run into lead time issues especially for prototype builds.
Your fabricator might not have 3 oz copper clad laminate on hand and you
will have to wait for material to be manufactured.

Kenny, unless the geometries are so tight that good yields are
impossible, fewer layers are always cheaper than more.

Subject: [TN] Board Cost

Good afternoon from the Great Northwet,

I was just asked to sign off on a PWB drawing that is a four layer board
with 3 oz. copper on each layer. According to engineering they have to
have 3 oz. copper or equivalent. They are small boards, about 2" X 3"
and not very dense. They have three through-hole circular connectors and
some wire entry holes. They are laid up in a tab route with eight
boards.

My question is, would it be cheaper to have a multilayer board with
additional 1 oz. copper layers to equal the 3 oz. they need or the way
they designed it?

Thanks,

KennyB
