I was with an international group of colleagues in a Bangkok hotel a few
years ago. We had all just arrived and were all jet-lagged (except for
our Thai host) and were not over-hungry but felt we could not last to
breakfast. Our host suggested a snack of tom yum with a bowl of white
rice. Now, I'm an amateur of tom yum, but, boy, that one deserved 50 red
chilis on the menu to indicate the scale of spiciness. Both our host and
a Mexican friend gave up on it after a ¼ of their bowl, but they were
drinking beer with it. Those of us who were drinking green tea lasted at
least ½ way through. Alcohol enhances the spiciness.
