        Hi Gary:
What kind of valve do you have? Is it a ball valve, gate valve. Having the right valve that is going to work 100% of the time at high temp is critical. I would say, if it is possible without much risk of the valve failing, the speediest way to empty the solder tank is by pouring instead of scooping.
        Regards,
        Ramon

Subject: Re: [TN] Wave Solder Pot Draining Best Practices

Sorry, I been busy and couldn't reply to this. I have dropped solder
numerous time over the last thirty years. I agree with using the
aluminum baking pans -real ones not the one time use foil jobbies.
But, you guys a scaring me with all the ladling and moving of pans. I
have always adapted a pipe to extend the machine drain to a height that
is slightly greater than the height of the aluminum pan. Then you can
slide a pan under - open the drain valve to fill - shut off the valve
and slide the pan out, using pliers to move the pan - repeat ad nauseam.

Caution - the down spout pipe should be bigger than the machine's to
prevent its plugging and your plant's flooring material may need to be
considered.
