I can't comment on the risk of igniting the vapors when you strike an
arc, but I have watched welders weld empty gasoline tanks, and natural
gas pipelines. One method filled the tank full of water before welding
the leak shut. (Welding can be done underwater as well) Another method
was to pull the service truck up to the ditch, hook a hose up to the
exhaust of the truck and run it into the ditch for an unspecified amount
of time before attempting the weld. I won't vouch for their
intelligence, but professional welders I've run into are sure good at
what they do. And if your tank is anything other than mild steel, I
wouldn't attempt the weld myself, rather use a professional instead.

Subject: [TN] Welding and Vapor Phase fluid

Hello all,

I need to grind and re-weld a bracket in my vapor phase machine and was
wondering what precautions to take? There is a very thin residual amount
of
VP fluid at the bottom of the tank after draining.

Any takers?
