Barry,
Are you writing a serial number, or just using a mark to
indicate "passed test" etc? If you are looking to serialize a board, you
may want to look at a laser etch system. If your volume is high enough
the cost is less then kapton labels.
We use turn-key laser etch systems from Control Micro Systems in
FL. We etch a 2D data matrix symbol on the rail of the panel in a
consistent location to enable us to read the data matrix symbol on the
fly as it moves down the conveyor, and a 2D serial number on every board
on the panel. We also etch human readable information when there is
room.
The serial numbers are linked, so you can do your data analysis
from board to panel and panel to board. When we test a panel, we scan
the panel serial number, once the individual boards are broken off the
panel we use the symbol on each board.

Regards,
Chris

Subject: [TN] Methods for marking PCB's

Hello,

Can someone recommend methods for marking pcb's. It needs to be able to
withstand wave soldering temps. Currently we mark different builds with
a permanent marker. This is messy looking and time consuming. Any help
will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Barry Darnell
