In spite of the forces pushing for increased tribalism in the US we still
lead the way at being E Pluribus Unum.  Multi-ethnic, mono-cultural. United
we stand. Divided we fall.

Give large credit to the Scotch-Irish influence that still dominates US
culture (dating to waves of Ulster Scot immigration from 1600's to
mid-1700's).  Unlike the English serfs to the south, the Scots were an
inclusive, bottom-up, meritocracy where immigrants were welcome and leaders
were chosen by acclamation not birthright.
