Hi Inge!

Got your pictures up! Go to: http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com and
look at "Too much gold 1", and "Too much gold 2"...

Hi Ramon,
actually one thousand of an inch! Equal to 25 micrometers. When you
measured on various spots of the legs, the gold varied from 1 to nearly 25
micrometers. I'll post two pics for Steve's crowded galleria, one showing
the actual microwave device, the other a cross section of a leg with 10
micrometers of gold. The manufacturer of the hardware said, that it can be
a problem to get an even layer of gold on such devices. Nonsense...

        Hi Ingemar:
What do you mean with a mil? One thousand of an
inch or a millionth of an inch? My understanding has been the first one,
which is what I think you mean. Some books abbreviate millionth of an inch
as mil.
        Regards,
        Ramon

Steve,
warning: first of all, crossection one pc and have a look at the
gold thickness. We have a problem with degolding on a batch just now:
the ordinary dip-dip has to be prolonged because of too much gold. We
measured up to 1 mil of gold on some legs! And only a fraction of
that on another leg. Ideal is just a flash, if the nickel is good.
It's sometimes a problem to give correct plating to these tiny things.
In Chin...oops..

Hi All!

We've got this Bipolar Microwave Transistor that I've just seen for
the first time, and I was asked if this part needs tinning because of
the gold plating.

I know what the J-STD says, but looking at the construction of the part,
I don't know if the part can withstand the heat of a tinning operation.

Take a look at "Bipolar Transistor" on my web page at:

http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com

I've tried to track down a datasheet, but can't seem to find one. The top
of the part is marked; "TRW 54601" and just below that, there's a "C86"
marked there.

The part may be very robust, and I have nothing to worry about. But
because this is the first time I've seen something like this, I thought I'd
ask the experts out there...

Kind regards,
