Steve,

I have not been following this thread very closely, so if my comments are too late to be of benefit, then so be it.

It looks like you may have a relay that has glass to metal seals where the leads pass through the relay base. If you do see glass beads where the leads pass through the 'header', you will typically have a kovar or alloy 42 lead - in any case, not readily solderable without nickel + something [like gold, tin, tin/lead, etc ... plating]

It looks like the nickel plating has given up and has lost adhesion to the base metal of the lead. This might be due to a plating adhesion problem, or possibly too tight of a bend radius on the leads themselves.

I agree with what Guy has seen/said too.

Steve C

I something like once at a former place of employment. But the plating was
gold over some kind of ferrous lead frame (Kovar??). The devices were
ceramic with flat leads. One time buy, and stored for years. We formed them
for through-hole insertion, just prior to use. In one lot, some of the leads
fractured when formed, on others the lead finish cracked (as in your
picture). The leads had rusted under the plating.

It was ugly. The solder wet up the lead finish. But, it was fairly easy to
pull the leads right out of the solder fillet.

YAY! IT'S MONDAY!!! YAY!

(Ya'll are probably saying; "Sheesh, what's Steve been smoking?")

I'm not smoking anything...I said "YAY" with my tongue in my cheek, so to
speak.

It's Monday again, and I have a couple of pictures for you to look at and
let me know
if any of you have seen anything like this before. We got these pictures
from our customer
asking us if we know what might have caused this. Go to:

http://www.stevezeva.homestead.com

and look at "Plating Peel" and "Plating Peel Close-up". Obviously, this is
something that
you don't want to see on component leads. It kinda' looks like the lead is
shedding it's
skin...

We're going to contact the component vendor about this to see if they can
shed some light
on why this is happening...I wished I had the assembly here that the
pictures came from, but
we only have the photos right now.

Anybody ever seen this before?

"Monday, monday...can't trust that day
Monday, monday...sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh monday mornin' you gave me no warnin' of what was to be
Oh monday, monday...how could you leave and not take me."
