I used to repair the "horse" car amplifiers for a friend.  They put
a lead plate in the case to make them feel heavy and beefed-up.
Very cheap stuff indeed. I wonder what the no-lead people would think
of that practice!!!!!

Not that strange at all. I have seen similar on some personal projects.
mIt is unethical and dangerous but there are people out there who don't
care.
Look at cheap car stereo stuff. I won't name anybody, but if the name is
like a horse watch out.
