In our case with no-clean solder/paste the solder balls were eliminated with
reduced paste deposit and longer pre-heat dwell times.

        Hi Carmen:
Solder ball is an indication that the process needs to be refined.
Moisture in the barrels, or any cavity can cause the sudden explosion of
vapor which brings the solder up and causes the solder balls. I would make
sure that boards are dried. Perhaps as you say it may be the solder, try
other type of solder.
        Good luck,
        Ramon

we use a no clean solder and flux, which i believe is what is causing the
solder balls, any suggestions on what to do to cut down the solder balls.
Carmen
