Then...does VP have a future? And, furthermore, is there any nicer products
in sight? We plan to buy new in-line machine. Interesting to hear what you
got in that Merlin glass...

Subject: Re: [TN] vapor pahse soldering systems

I like vapour phase soldering as an elegant system but, before
committing yourself, be aware that there is a hefty environmental price
to pay. The fluids used are perfluorinated hydrocarbons and derivatives.
These are classed under the heading of perfluorocarbons or PFCs. PFCs,
along with sulfur hexafluoride, are the worst vapours/gases known to man
as greenhouse gases and have a GWP some tens of thousand times higher
than carbon dioxide. Even worse, they have an atmospheric residence time
of over 10,000 years, This means that if you lose 1 kg of the stuff,
there could still be 400 - 500 g floating around in the air when your
400 x great-grandchildren are around (assuming man survives that length
of time).

PFCs are also controlled substances under the Kyoto Protocol.

Then, of course, they are horrendously expensive.

Don't think this won't affect you. VP soldering is fine for plane
surfaces, but on electronics assemblies, some of the vapour is
ineluctably captured under components, in coil windings etc. It may take
hours before this vapour is emitted and each gram lost that way will
cost you a sizable fraction of a dollar, despite what the machine makers
may say.
