Correct, but you are not trying to achieve 1000 or 100 ppm accuracy with
these tests. XRF, such as those described below, is good for composition to
about 0.3% (3000 ppm) depending on collection time, standards, sample
geometry and equipment precision.

James,

We've been routinly measuring the plating thickness and composition of 0.5mm
pitch pads for years with our XRF which has a 3-mil collimator. We've also
correlated our measurements with Auger depth profiling so we know they are,
maybe not extremely accurate, but they are most certainly in the ballpark.

James,
If this is the case, then how have we been able to use thickness XRFs for
years to measure plating thicknesses and the collimators are in the order of
12 mills in diameter?
Bev

XRF's need around 1" sq surface area to work on which eliminates their
use on all components and most PCB's.

Hi Chris, IPC LF Listservers,

Forgetting the Spot Tests for a minute, how about these hand held XRF
units
that your links to SMART testing also found unreliable.

I just fast read, I believe the complete IEC test document 7x pages,
that
indicated that portable XRF units were fully acceptable.

GEE, Isn't this implementation phase FUN!!!
with lots of bumps on the road, Now don't groan...
