You may wish to contact Alan Brewin at NPL in the UK who may have some info
on mixing chemistries ( not listed on there web site though) We have used
them for consultancy on RoHs.

Dennis,

I would like to see the articles that you have concerning Pb contamination
in LF solder joints.

Also, from what I understand of using LF components in a SnPb process, that
the main issue is getting the LF platings to wet properly, which may need
higher temperatures.

I understand there's also reliability issues with Pb Contamination in solder
joints when using Lead Free Solders.
Basically the Pb results in a 179C Eutectic alloy SnPbAg. This concentrates
itself at the last point to cool and results in small pockets. It is
interesting to note that Pb contamination of 2-5% is detrimental to the
joint but contamination of 10-15% reliability increases again. I have a few
articles talking about this. Please contact me offline if you wish a copy.

On a slightly different note, is lead free components compatible with a Lead
Process. I understand that it should be with SMT apart but how's does it
affect Pb Wave Soldering? Increase in Cu contamination?

Sure, it will be ok as long as you aren't expecting the visual
appearance to be equivalent to LF.

You will probably get better looking solder joints depending on how much
lead.

Only issue is wave solder, where if you have already cleaned the pot,
you will introduce Pb as a contaminant.

Leadfree netters,
I have a customer who wants us to build a board to help him validate
lead free. He has a partial mix of components (some are lead free,
others are SnPb). Would it be ok to solder the SnPb components using
lead free solder? I know and understand the product will not be RoHS
compliant, but this is for internal study and not to be marketed.
thanks,
Larry
