Well, if those autos happen to have diesel engines in them, then
hundreds of diesels can be used in a Detroit car train. Seriously, I
don't know about Detroit because it pretty flat country, but here in the
West U.S. with steep mountains, 6 engines is not uncommon (4 in front
and 2 in back), nor are (more than) kilometer long trains (in the flat
valleys of course).

Fine! I just have to get into the discussion another way. We have some
train
enthusiasts here (build models). One day there was a great discussion
that was
heard a long distance. How many diesel engines can be used in a Detroit
car train? One said maximum two. Another four. On top of that, one guy
said
he had personally seen 6 engines pulling a one kilometer long train that
moved
not faster than you jog. Who was right?

Roger,

I say from experience that if you're doing any wetting balance testing,
even the slightest vibration can be a problem. We had a wetting balance
unit in a second floor lab, and the unit was extremely sensitive to
transmitted vibration. When we were doing these tests we had to work
around break times and meal times at the cafeteria as the unit easily
detected the pitter-patter of fast food feet.

We also had similar problems with the microscopes at or above 500X.
Rearranging the lab to put those benches along supported interior walls
and posts made a big improvement.

I have a great appreciation for railroad rumbles. Many moons ago I used
to live on the 2nd. floor of an ancient wooden building about 50-75m
from the tracks. When those big freight trains loaded with new cars and
trucks from the Ford plant went by, I was sure that me and my waterbed
were headed for the basement.

We are considering sites for a new plant. One of the candidates is about
100m from a railway line. It is the mainline across the country and has
very
high traffic. We have recieved a vibration study of the property but
are
not sure how much impact this will have on production processes. Is
there
any level of vibration that is known to affect smt processes ,through
hole,
wave soldering, microscope use?

peak particle velocities were measured at 0.045 in/sec , and
0.005in/sec
background vibration levels.

I have a table that indicates >0.01 as slightly perceptible to humans ,
>0.025 distinctly perceptible to humans.

Any experiences or input would be appreciated, we don't usually have to
worry about these things on the prairies.
