Roger,
you are planning a new plant and ask TN for advice? Gosh, man, you need advice!
Depends on what you are building, and what machines and instruments you are using.
When we planned our wafer fab, the requirement was maximum 1 um/s!. We had to
carv out thousands of tons of stone in the ground to reach pure granite.
When I installed latest scanning electron microscope the floor vibration had to
be maximum 10 um/s in the spectra 5-30 Hz, under and over this frequency, it was
not so critical. And other buildings had no requirements at all, because they were
just for storage.

0.005 in/s is under normal human's capability to feel vibration,
0.045 in/s is considered maximum level for human comfort

So, from human viewpoint, your levels seem to be just fine, but maybe not from
machine sight.

And, note that in/s level is not the only factor of interest, but frequency spectra!
At certain frequency, a machine can get into self resonancy, and you get a vibration
level magnification.

I'm not a specialis on this theme, but I've been involved in some planning, and I
just give you the advice: contact a specialist as early as possible.

Subject: [TN] limits for plant vibration


We are considering sites for a new plant. One of the candidates is about
100m from a railway line. It is the mainline across the country and has very
high traffic.  We have recieved a vibration study of the property but are
not sure how much impact this will have on production processes. Is there
any level of vibration that is known to affect smt processes ,through hole,
wave soldering, microscope use?

peak particle velocities were measured at 0.045 in/sec , and   0.005in/sec
background vibration levels.

I have a table that indicates >0.01 as slightly perceptible to humans ,
>0.025 distinctly perceptible to humans.

Any experiences or input would be appreciated, we don't usually have to
worry about these things on the prairies.
