Hi,
I have a customer that need to soldered the transistor, a DPAK upside down,
permanently.
Guess what, it is a satelite base station. It has been like this for past 2
years.
So, I do not think this is a prototype...
I got many more crazy way of soldering the component, even on the
underneath the BGA component.

a class 1 board. I have done it by gluing the part to the board ( upside up
), raising the leads so that they are floating and using jumpers to pads.

I've just been informed of a modification on a boards that requires to
install a SOT23 NPN transistor to be fliped on its back in order to be
soldered. The poor leads are then bent backward to contact with the
board's lands of some other component.
