Scott: I want to remind you that the legal system does not necessarily operate by "normal logic", or fairness, and that often some of the most outrageously obvious stuff gets patented. And it is often done in full knowledge by the patent applicant that what they are attempting to patent is in common use, but they intend to use it as a goad to force others to pay a fee. I could cite instance of just such behaviors, done by firms who have employees who are members of this forum.

Remember this, you are innocent until proven guilty, and if you have evidence that you have been doing this before the patent was granted, you can usually cut a nice deal with the patent holder, that in exchange for not letting the patent office know about how stupid the patent was, you will be granted a no-charge, or $1.00 charge license in perpetuity...

Whose company has paid fees for violating really stupid patents... and then gotten great revenge...!

DC members,

I have encountered a patent which any through-hole land patterns with an
annular ring of >0.4mm and used for lead-free soldering is in violation
of. We have used 0.4mm as our standard annular ring for all
through-hole devices with hole sizes greater than 1.6mm for years. A
link to the patent is provided below. Are there any IPC documents I can
use to invalidate this patent? Any suggestions or comments will be
welcomed.
