We want to reduce the cycle time for laying 5mil together with 1 mil

You could use a piece of Dupont LF0150 or LF0250. This is 5 mils +
adhesive. The problem with this is drilling the kapton. It tends to tear
or shred and when you press it on you can get little stringers which may
affect the annular ring.
Another solution might be to take a piece of 3 or 4 core polyimide (or FR4)
with some prepreg (106 no flow?) and bond this on the board. The stiffner
and prepreg should drill fairly well.
