Vias - Can we just "assume" them?

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council will
hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan 25th at 6pm in the
cafeteria of American Power Conversion (APC) in Billerica MA.

We use vias every day, but are we making the right choices?
Newer techniques have improved them immensely since the days
when eyelets were soldered into the holes, but what are the
tradeoffs? When are we costing ourselves money, or reliabil-
ity? This has been a changeable realm but sometimes they are
subtle changes. Are old assumptions still valid?

Should we be tenting vias with today's thin soldermask mater-
ials? How about filling them and plating over? How should
        we base these decisions?

Randy Meador, Vice President of Engineering for San Jose's
Gorilla Circuits will present an update on via production
techniques, failure modes, and reliability. Randy has been
involved with every aspect of PCB Engineering for 33 years.
Currently he is Vice President of Engineering at Gorilla Cir-
cuits in San Jose California. Prior to joining the team at
Gorilla, Randy was NPI Engineering Mgr. at Sanmina and the
Hadco "Tech Center" as well as serving as Process Eng. Mgr.
at Multek and Tyco Industries. He has presented symposiums
on a variety of topics such as base materials and laminates,
NC drilling techniques, high aspect ratios, and lead-free.
He has earned awards from companies like Marconi, IBM, Cre-
        dence, and GE.

Gorilla Circuits was established to provide a printed circuit
engineering and fabrication solution to electronic companies
that demand the highest level of quality, personalized ser-
vice, and flexibility. Gorilla Circuits has earned a well-
-deserved reputation for delivering flawless circuits on time

        President's Note:

Here's a topic that we'd all like to ignore, but from what
I've seen of customer requests, we'd do well to understand
more clearly. Here's an installment on doing more justice
to this everyday but oft overlooked topic.

        Mission:

Now more than ever, the printed board design community needs
to be gaining expertise in all areas that touch a finished
board. If we can continue to anticipate the needs of those
who engineer, fabricate and produce them we can withstand the
        onslaught of global competition.

The Greater Boston Chapter of the IPC Designer's Council is
dedicated to bringing you every angle we can find so you can
enhance your knowledge and add value to your job in new ways.

Your help and participation would be most appreciated, how
        about getting involved!

        Thanks and regards,
--
