This is often done for EMI containment. The drilling pitch is a function
of the wave length of the radiation.

Laser stitching is done by using a laser drill and drilling vias from
the
layer 1 to 2 about 1 cm or less apart in a stitching pattern. I am
interested in knowing the reason for doing this.
