Hey, finally a question I can answer. Russell, what you say is true, but
only if you are doing a qualification to J-STD-001, as you state in a later
reply. Then you need to have the test boards made from the same material
set as your product, made by the same vendors, run through the same
manufacturing process, etc.

To answer the original question, IPC test boards can be found at a number
of vendors. IPC used to keep them on hand but the demand was so low that
the boards often became unsolderable before they got sold. IPC has a list
of vendors that supply these boards, but I just looked it over and it is
severely out of date. For myself, I get the IPC boards for my studies from
Diversified Systems in Indianapolis. Pretty good quality, delivery and
price.

Follow this thread: http://www.divsys.com/ServicesProducts/PCB/IPCBoards/

Some of the test labs that supply SIR testing may also carry these boards.
One suggestion, wherever you get your boards, run them through a cleaning
process before you do any manufacturing studies. I have seen more SIR
tests messed up because the original boards were not clean than for any
other reason. If you don't have a cleaner in house, but have access to an
Ionograph or Omegameter, run a 15 minute cycle.

As for test labs, you should be able to get good service from Trace Labs,
Microtek Labs, Pacific Testing Labs, Delsen Labs, or Precision Analytical
Labs. All are active IPC participants in the SIR committees.

Ted,

You will need to contact your PWB supplier because the coupons must come
from the fab house that you use. They must also be from the same substrate
configuration (i.e. material, soldermask and surface finish) that you use.
If you are going to comply with IPC requirements you will need coupons from
each supplier and each fab configuration that you have. Therefore, you
cannot simply purchase off the shelf coupons. Sorry. Perhaps your fab
house will have some with your configuration already available.

Subject: [TN] SIR coupons and test

Hi Fellow Technetter,

Does anyone know a place to get off-the-shelf SIR test
coupons. IPC supposes to have it, but nothing showed
up when I search for "B-24".

I am also looking for a place that can run the SIR
test as well. Please let me know it anyone out there
has a contact.

Thanks all in advance.

Ted
