It seems to me that this is one of the first recorded cases in history
of Quality telling Manufacturing NOT to rework an assembly!

Subject: Re: [TN] copper exposed

You know, it just really chaps my hide when people in manufacturing and
production do not accept the direction and interpretation of those of us
in
quality...we obviously know more than they do, why do they need to cause
us
so much trouble???

(grinning) Boy I bet that sent some heads spinning...it was of course
said
off the cuff...so relax...

My question would be what affect will there be on the exposed copper
over
time? Will, or could this lead to reliability issues later? If that
amount
of exposed copper is allowed, and it reliability including normal
function
is not affected then leave it alone...to mess with it may only cause
more
expense...if reliability could be affected...then perhaps it needs to be
addressed...it's all about weighing the factors involved...

Now, for those production types whose head exploded on that first
paragraph...duct tape wrapped tight around the skull will contain the
gray
matter...just a thought...

Subject: [TN] copper exposed

        Good AM Techies,

We have some resistors that did not take the tinning all the way
to
the
body. There is some copper exposed by the body, but the lead in the
solder
connection is good. Per IPC-610, if copper is exposed due to
deformation
or nicks/gouges >10%, it is a defect. We have absolutely no deformation
in
these component leads. My decision was to leave them in the board. We
have a Mfg. Engineer who wants to have them all replaced. He feels I
have
interpreted the IPC-610 incorrectly. I feel that this is unnecessary
rework that could damage the PCB. Any supporters out there?
