Well...if you remember back to your Chemistry lab class, you were asked
to wash your beakers and such with DI water from the tap first.  After
washing, they were then chemically "cleaned" with a distilled water
rinse (either from a special tap or jug).  Why not step straight to
cleaning with distilled water?  Because you have to evaporate water to
get distilled water.  Evaporation is a lot harder to do than using line
water pressure or pumps to push water through DI beds, so the supply of
distilled water is harder to come by.  (unless you are on a nuclear
powered vessel, in which case distilled water is easy to come by).

Very interesting article, which leads me to another question.  Since DI
water can dissolve or remove salts so effectively and distilled water is
not
quite as effective, what are the drawbacks of using distilled water on
electronic assemblies.
