I can see Ron's point of view, but Roger's opinion makes some sense. All the designer can do is offer the pros and cons of an engineer's direction. Although we might like to take a more direct approach in getting our point across to them, is seldom a good idea. Let the engineer make the final decision, keep a Pearl Harbor file if need arises; many times, if the engr's idea doesn't work, he/she has your idea to fall back on. I had to learn this lesson the hard way years ago... a good working relationship with engineers is invaluable. (where possible, not all engrs created equal). I've been successful in developing a good relationship with all my engineers here, which has proved invaluable (must say, a good set of EEs anyway).
As a wise fellow once said, be careful about the battles you chose to fight. You can win the battle, but lose the war (so to speak) !
And on connectors, we will make alternate footprints for various pin configurations (standard, mirrored or reversed), and use the one directed. And we will typically default to using the male connector as the pin 1 reference, just to be consistent. Sounds redundant, time-consuming, etc., etc., but that's reality.

And just read George's e-mail (thanks, fella), it should be a team effort and the company's design and methodology (give me an AMEN!), but this is the real world. As my pappy said, "and if a frog had wings he wouldn't bump his fanny every time he hopped."

Ron:
This is an interesting, and IMO, distorted view!
As the layout designer, it is 'our job' to follow the instructions
given by the young engineer in all things in HIS design! He is the
'Creator', you are the artist. Give advice if you must. However,
advice is only "advice" and it is up to him whether to follow it or
NOT!
Connector 'Pin' numbering is often arbitrary, and I have seen many
mistakes with foot prints which I thought were according to some
standard, and they were not. But when I am only rendering someone
else's design, they are always the final authority.
Just my perspective as someone who has been an Engineer and a
Designer for over forty years.

Karl,
As the layout designer, it is our job to train the young engineer in
good practices. Having multiple symbols with different pinouts is a
librarian's nightmare and will surely screw up the assembly process
with
unnecessary delays. As a company(read team), we have customers. Who
takes the heat when the layout is wrong? I can tell you it isn't the
engineer who insisted on a wrong concept. Being a designer is so much
more than being someone who hooks up wires.
