Subject: Re: [TN] Removal of Connector

If you have to remove many of these connectors, the solder wave or solder
pot solutions are best. I have removed a single connector (like this one)
with the following process:

1. Strip a piece of wire from some house-wiring cable to retrieve a length
of 10 or 12 gauge copper wire the length of your connector.

2. Roll this piece of wire between two flat surfaces to remove any kinks.

3. Coat it with a generous layer of solder.

4. Position the board such that the connector can fall down (or be pulled
down) without interference.

5. Add gobs of solder (a technical term) to each pin of the connector,
forming a solder ball at each pin.

6. Lay the copper wire (heat spreader bar) across all of the solder-balled
pins.

7. Heat the copper wire with two (or more) medium to high wattage irons,
adding solder as necessary to form a continuous bar of molten solder across
all of the connector pins.

8. If the connector doesn't drop out, gently pull it out of the holes after
all the solder melts on the top of the board.

9. Lift the wire from the board (while maintaining contact with the irons)
with your favorite grabbing tool.

10. Remove excess solder from the holes and clean the board as necessary.

Warning: take precautions to avoid injury from excessive solder dropping or
splashing from the board as the connector is removed.

We do something like this on occasion, but we run the wave machine in manual
mode - turn the conveyor off when the board is right over the wave, and then
turn the wave on. Count to 5 and gently pull up... have an assistant turn
the wave off.

We have also replaced connectors this way, on occasion. Very handy for very
large connectors, but otherwise not recommended... and keep in mind that
there are lots of very hot things in there where you usually don't stick
your hand.

Try this method using a scrap board first to get a feeling
of the fine details. Mask board area around the connector with hi temp tape
or other material. Preheat board in an oven. Place board on a solder wave
fixture. Have one person slide the fixture over the wave till connector is
right over the solder and another pull up gently and easy the connector
after about 8 seconds.

Subject: Re: [TN] Removal of Connector

Hi Technetters,

I am facing an issue with a board of 10 layers and 2mm thick, gold plated. I
need to remove a 72 pin through hole connector. However, I am not able to
remove the connector using solder iron & solder sucker.

I understand if I am to use solder pot, I should be able to remove it. But I
do not have a mini-solder pot.

I am wandered if there is other way to take out the connector. Can someone
help to advise me other methods to remove the connector.

Thanks.

Poh
