Wow, but that looks like it covers every aspect. Now to start timing
and counting.

Thanks Ioan.

Phil,

being as serious as Doug, I really believe an honest answer is "it
depends
and the formula lies solely with you".

It depends on your equipment and your process. Do you have a sequencer
or
you order custom sequences? Do you have manual assembly and how
automated it
is, 100% manual, or using pointing devices?

The only way to start is to do the stop watch thing. You time bigger
boards
and smaller boards on each machine, calculate the number of insertions
per
second and average them. Then you don't have to forget the setup time,
which
you calculate the same way. At the end you'll have an idea on how many
comps
you can insert per second on each machine and what is the average setup
time
per part number.

Same thing for manual, you time different assemblers doing the same
operation and average. You will have the time per class of components
(like
5 sec per connector 30pins+, 3 sec per polarized comps, etc.).

You should also approximate an average throughput for your wave
soldering
machine and a time per manual solder joint (2-3 seconds). You might also
have selective soldering or multi dip, which makes it more complicate.

Then you pray that you get a good BOM, so that everything be clear, and
you
start:
* so many comps on bottom, so many on top
* you make a draft of the process (what goes to the machines, what
goes manual)
* start multiplying the parts count for each machine with the
corresponding parts per sec
* calculate the total time for manual soldering
* compute the wave soldering time
* multiply the number of part numbers per machine with the setup
time
per part
* try to find out what is the lot size and divide the sum of the
setup
times by the lot size
*       sum it all up

As you go, you will find the fuzzy spots and clarify them. It took us
one
year to have a smart labor sheet.

Good luck,
Ioan
