Larry,
You need to add to your "Price Adder List".
9. High volume vs low volume
10. Small drill sizes <0.010"
11. High aspect ratios >10
12. Finished line widths < 0.004" (O/L) and 0.003" on I/L
13. ENIG vs OSP, HASL or Imm Ag
14. 100% hole plugging vs 40%
15. Edge plating
16. Edge milling

All these 16 factors are mostly 'Accounting' and you can get those from
your fabricators ahead of time. These are the 'numerator' of Board
Pricing. But the 'denominator' of any board price is its "YIELD" and that
is under your control because of how 'COMPLEX' you design the board. Ask
your fabricator for his 'A and B' coefficient to his "First Pass YIELD"
equation. From this you can predict your boards yield within 3% and thus
DFM the board to give you the lowest price. Not to much you can do about
the 'numerator' other that doesn't use those options or go to a fabricator
that does not use them.

Beware...those fabricators that have very good yields use more 'cost
adders'. Those that have poor yields (high A's and low B's) use less cost
factors because the denominator is lower (thus a higher price and lower
quality).

IF they don't have the FPY models to give you, have them reread the
September-1998 and September-1999 CircuiTree "Happy Thoughts" columns on
YIELDS! and HDI:DFM.

[TN] DFM Cost Factors

Hi All ,

What are some ways to DFM for high copper? Our customer has asked on 2-4
oz designs, HDI.
Without the designs to show, some have plated filled over vias, laser
drilling, and blind and buried vias ( "viers"). The material is 175 Tg, so
lead free is not coming for free as well.

Suggestions?

TIA
Larry Russell

I'm trying to understand what causes PCB to increase in prices. We have
narrowed down to few items.

1. Buried via

2. Blind via

3. 4oz copper compare to 3 oz copper

4. Laser drilling

5. Nelco material vs the Nanya Material

6. routing tolerance

7. hole size tolerance

8. thickness tolerance

Please let me know if you can tell us something about our designs that
makes it more expensive and how we can change it to make it less
expensive.
