Nothing nasty, just having a smile enjoying our differences same as between
different parts of North America, and of course there is Irish English ,
Indian English, OZ and Kiwi English and .... perhaps we should let it go
after all.

Mike

What about ferrum (Fe), cuprum (Cu), aurum (Au), stannum (Sn), hydrargyrum
(Hg) and plumbum (Pb)?

Looks like -um is older than -ium.

Let's not start up the nasty Brit vs. American thing again, OK?
English on both sides of the pond has plenty of inconsistency to go around.

There's Tantalanium, Lanthanium, Platinium, Molybdenium. Have I forgotten
any!

The Brits are consistent. Please name me all the other elements that end
in -um but do not end in -ium, then name me all the ones that do end
thus. In fact, I was told by a director of Alcoa that the error was made
at the start-up of the corp. They had printed a prospectus to attract
capital and it was only after it was ready to go out that someone saw
there was a spelling error. They had neither the money nor the time to
reprint it, so the error stuck. Just sheer carelessness.
