Hello Rick,

Another approach is to use SST baskets with a flexible cover made of
belt stock (similar to the conveyor belt). This SST flexible cover
could possibly be added to the existing mesh and provide the protection.
A proper grounding path is critical where ESD concerns are present. If
the mesh limits this path (particularly in a dry section of the
cleaner), then how much effort is required to ensure any potential is
acceptable for all components on a particular assembly?...and, then
demonstrate to your customer acceptability.

Hope this is helpful,

Subject: [TN] Aqueous cleaner mats??

We have traditionally used mesh mats in our aqueous cleaner baskets for
protection of small boards. These mats were made out of polypropylene
(sp?) but recently a customer requested that we remove them for ESD
concerns because a charge can be measured on them when exiting the
cleaners after hot-air drying. The only ESD matting we've been able to
locate is somewhat absorbent and tends to become saturated with
contaminants over time. Does anyone know of any matting that is ESD safe
but not absorbent? I believe the mats we originally used are fairly
common in use; is there documented evidence that the charge that
registers on them is not sufficient to cause any damage?

Thanks in advance for any insights.
