Roger, I love you; couldn't have said it better. We call it "forward obedience", which normally is not my way of thinking, but I can't offer any better recommendation. Does anyone know of new decisions/proposals on categories 8&9, if they have been revisited by the EC re RoHS? Maybe You, Kay or Double-You, Bob (got the hint, DDave?) ((please excuse me, Kay and

Bob)) know something more? Or do we have to wait until February 13, 2005 to learn that by then we won't know any more.

Still, due to my unfortunately born-german background, please Roger, could you advise me to a suitable dictionary to understand these abb.s?

In the meantime, I understand WEEE and RoHS, and (thanx to Brian) IMHO, but not yet OTOH & YMMV. My intellectual properties just reach up to BRgds, which I do of course support.

Dave makes a good point; however, the EC has not yet made a final determination of what items within Cat 8 or 9 will be covered by the RoHS directive, per Article 6:

*******************

Article 6

Review

Before 13 February 2005,the Commission shall review the measures provided for in this Directive to take into account,as necessary, new scientific evidence.

In particular the Commission shall,by that date, present propo- sals for including in the scope of this Directive equipment which falls under categories 8 and 9 set out in Annex IA to Directive 2002/96/EC (WEEE).

*******************

So one could feel confident that their product(s) will be exempted, and then find out that it isn't. Might be good to have a Plan B to fall back on.

OTOH, If your product(s) end up on the exemption list, then it is business as usual. As always, YMMV.

Looking forward to a 4-day weekend,

BRgds,

Roger

And Dave, we wouldn't dream of killing you... maybe a little torture, but no termination.

Hi Dickey-John Gary, GPS-Trimble, IPC LF Listservers,

I agree with your management, (OK kill me, since this is an abnormal for me)

You are certainly exempted within the directives you have noted, and I believe without full knowledge, for good logical reasons. The purpose of the directives seem to me to strive to achieve maximum reduction for those products that have known lead (Pb) profiles and do not create TOO much difficulty in the marketplace in the replacement of Pb (lead).

There are other directives, you should check, and you should know that the EU, EC is still on this lead free frenzy. SO,, you should check out whether LF makes any difference in the performance or short/long longevity of your products. Since you are from a farming community this check out just makes sense and can be a lot of fun.

Yours in Engineering, Dave
