They are both inexpensive and ineffective. :-) The moisture trap will
capture much, but not all, of the condensed filthy oil emulsion (often
rusty, to boot!). It will not remove humidity from the compressed air.
As the air loses pressure at the gun, adiabatic expansion will cause it
to cool (the opposite of the heat generated at the compressor) and
further condensation will occur, causing droplets to impinge on the
workpiece. The oil filter may remove half of the oil droplets, assuming
you are not using a Rootes oil-less compressor. You also should have a 5
um mechanical filter, followed by a 0.5 um one to eliminate particulate
matter.

I have always promoted the idea of blowing from distilled, bottled air
or, better, nitrogen. It costs more, but is moisture-free, oil-free and
particle-free.
