When my wife and I moved to Massachusetts, she would have pronounce the
cities Phil mentioned, just so everyone could laugh at me! You missed
the biggest one, though, Phil: Peabody! Pronounced by Mass residents as
Peabuddy, not Pea-body!

Also, can anyone explain why roof, root, foot, and boot are not all
pronounced the same way? I catch all kinds of flack for rhyming roof
and root with foot, not boot!

Graham,

In a past life I visited and worked in Scotland and found that many
names were not pronounced anything like they were spelled (Strathaven =
Straven).

Kind of like here in New England;
Gloucester = Glosta
Haverhill = Haverill
Billerica = Billrika

Don't get me started on word choice differences (Truck vs. Lory, napkin
vs. serviette, elevator vs. lift, eraser vs. rubber, etc.). Grin.

Happy Friday and Happy Halloween.

Phil
