Well, I might be able to throw a little light, here. Guess what? In
Middle English, the word was sodder. This was derived from the French
soudure (which is still used, meaning a weld, the French for solder
being brasure (the joint), brasage (the act) or braser (the verb)). The
l was added in later (unknown date), possibly because the French soudure
was derived from the Latin solidare meaning to make solid. However, I
believe the l was there long before America was discovered, so it is
possible that the pronunciation peculiar to N. America (Canada???) was a
relic of some dialectal pocket, retaining the sound of the old spelling,
such as the West Country.

As it's Friday, the French word braser and the English to braze has
nothing to do with brass spelter ofttimes used for hard soldering. It is
derived from the French word braise, meaning hot charcoal, which
provided heat and a reducing atmosphere conducive to good hard
soldering. So a brazen (meaning brassy) hussy is quite different
etymologically from a brazen (heated in charcoal) joint or a braised
(heated over charcoal) steak.

Another snippet from my mine of useless info :-)

Best regards,

Brian
