Hi Dave - yes the definition is a real problem but there is not much
anyone can do about it ! The guidance notes help out as that is what
describes a homogeneous material as e.g. one type of plastic, one type
of metal etc.

best wishes
Kay

Hi Chris, Brian, Genny(our fire starter), IPC LF Listservers,

<Homogeneous is understood as "of uniform content throughout" which
anodising is obviously not and could therefore be separated by a
grinding or abrasive process.>

CALLING for Tin's-KAY, or DTI-Nick, or maybe UK or Swiss labs.

I believe, and I believe will be proven correct, that homogeneous is a
BAD
term used by the EU that will need to be replaced by some other term.
This
new term will probably confuse us all; as well, yet it will move us
beyond
the confusion the word homogeneous means to true engineers and
scientists.

Homogeneous is a very tough term since not many substances that we know
of
are true homogeneous substances when we reduce the size of the
comparative
island of investigation to a smaller and smaller volume that effects
it's
attributes to the more gross volume observer. A solder joint all by
itself
is non homogeneous when you look at the microstructure at the highest
magnification. Plastics (particularly any with fillers) and certainly
laminate materials (like FR4, etc) are not homogeneous.

Yours in Engineering, Dave

Y i Engr, MA/NY DDave
