Subject: Re: [LF] WEWE & RoHS Discussion Forum at DOLBY Laboratories

Hi Again Nick, IPC LF Listservers,

I was serious about the top notes in the last message I sent, so it

would

be nice if someone who was at this meeting at UK-Dolby replied On List

so

we all can learn.

Here are two more notes, of only a few more.

B1> Dolby/Avaya/Telsis Queston#3

I don't necessarily agree with the way I read their question yet I can

think of a similar scenario. Let's say I have a REALLY OLD technology

that isn't easily replaced. It isn't just "the manufacturer won't

produce it" "or the designer won't design it" it is about a product

and a function that requires Research and Development to create a new

  Lead Free component.

[James, Chris] If it is so old and can't be easily replaced it means

there is nothing on the market to do that job so someone would have to

design a new product anyway. You could repair the existing technology

with Pb technology. So can't really see your issue. If it were for a

restoration job of say a historic piece of equipment and something had

to be made new and was not compliant then I'd argue it would be exempt

as you probably only ever be making one or two, it would never go to

WEEE etc. etc.

B2> Refit / Upgrade Kits (Taylor-Hobson)

I guess this makes sense to me, considering my own argument towards

replacement parts for existing equipment being AOK. Yet still this

question and answer took me aback as a great question

So I could keep a product out in the field in a continual

upgrade status with TinLead components and technology.

Yours in Engineering, Dave
