Hey Suzy! Thanks for the kind words... Congratz!
One thing I would like to add to your 'most excellent' comments on the
outstanding volunteers who keep the organization moving...
The members of this organization are just that... MEMBERS... not
appendages... or some sort of useless 'flotsam'... You are all potential
leaders in one way or another... you can start by helping someone else.
People, we only get out of this organization what we put into it... We have
thousands of members, and only a very small few are stepping up to the plate
to help with the load of making things happen... And they have been at it
for sometime... you are not excluded or unqualified to help out... don't
feel like your contribution is unwanted or unappreciated... make the first
step and offer to help someone with a task... you'd be surprised how willing
most of us are to include you into things.
Start by lending a hand, in a meeting, or event, helping someone get a ride
to the meeting... assisting someone with the projector, offering to take the
meeting minutes, suggesting ideas for meeting content or conversation...
offer to pickup and deliver the food for the meeting so it gets delivered on
time... set up tables or chairs, attend meetings at events... invite a guest
or new member to the meetings.. these are just a few things that come to
mind...
It's the little things that can bring relief to some of those that are
carrying the load... reach out and lend a hand if you can... More hands make
the work light, the burden a breeze and a joy. Volunteer for office,
Secretary, treasurer, communications officer, webmaster, vice-president or
president of your local chapter... You might just help out another designer
to get their career on track, or help them to pick up information on the
next design challenge they will deal with in their job...
Your contribution to your friends IS appreciated...
Help make this YOUR Designers Council and help it work for ALL designers.
In fact, I've been thinking... we should have a big convention where all the
designers across the country could get together at PCB WEST this coming
year, throw a party... a big party... and just have some fun and get to know
each other... That would be a TRUE Designers SUMMIT... We could have a
raffle and do some fund raising maybe some of the CAD vendors could come up
with a 'prize'... maybe a contest of skills and wits...
Can you imagine having most all of the designers council members in one
place.. ? Pete could haul out the 'Porch Dawgs' blues brothers band and we
could really rock the house...
It could be like, uh.. the 'International IPC Designers council meeting'...
the biggest chapter meeting on earth... All of the chapters could converge
on one town and we could have guest speakers, technical content, networking,
Vendor displays and demos, CID and CID+ workshops, DFM, High Speed, RF and
Microwave design, Geometric Tolerancing, CAD libraries, all sorts of
training ... why we could even invite the assemblers and the manufactures to
join in the fun... It could dwarf anything we have seen to date.... It could
be like the Worlds Fair for PCB designers... What if IPC held the EXPO or
APEX at the same place at the same time? WOW... now that would drive folks
to attend it... you could do it all in one stop and save money on the hotel
and airfare... this would be the KING of events... whoa.... I feel dizzy....
:)
(okay... maybe I better slow down on the coffee... )
Why not though? Stranger things have happened....
(Just think about it... dream about the worlds fair.... clowns balloons...
rides... popcorn... Lead-free ice cream.. auto insertion machines filled
with coins... REAL AUTO-ROUTERS...that work... oh yea... I like it...
brings out the kid designer in me... ) (Can we work in some slot machines
into this too? Or maybe Vanna White... )
Ah well, that's what dreams are made of... it doesn't hurt to dream... how
do you think we made it to the moon?

Bill and all,
I could never come close to your testamonial and thanks given, but I would
like to say a few things. I am humbled by this award in the presence of all
the others who I feel are so much more deserving. I think it is ever so
important to remember the people in our industry who go out of their way to
give extra time and effort for the betterment and benefit of others in their
industry. So if you will permit me, I would like to do just that:
Those of you who do not participate on a national level of the Designer's
Council probably have very little idea what is going on behind you. You see
the names of people and wonder if maybe this a figurehead position. Well let
me tell you .... IT IS NOT! These are a group of people that spend their
time away from their jobs driving their individual chapters to success,
coming to national meetings to exchange ideas and solve problems, talking
endless hours on the phone encouraging others, and working to ensure the
future of printed circuit board designers as a whole. These are PASSIONATE
people. And they are passionate about your careers!
Way up at the top of that list would be Andy Kowalewski. He has worked
selflessly MEGA-hours for the Designer's Council in general, and as current
Chairman, he has had a phenomenal influence in the direction we are now
taking and has been an extremely positive influence on me personally with
his leadership abilities, his tactful responses, and his caring nature.
Alan Johnson comes to us from the UK and is our current Vice Chairman. He
has a purity of thought and that helps us to keep things clear and simple.
With that British wit, he reminds us that we are a national organization and
what we do affects everyone. He has worked endlessly on the teaching and
certification of people in his country and is helping to rewrite various
other documentation for all.
Another person with a great passion for the business is Rick Hartley. He is
a former chairman of the Designer's Council where he worked extensively
behind the scenes to better the careers of designers in general and to
motivate the rest of us to keep moving forward. He also works tirelessly
imparting all of his vast knowledge to the rest of us and brings a huge
amount of energy to everything he touches.
I don't even know where to begin to talk about Gary Ferrari! He IS the
Designer's Council in the eyes of many and although he no longer works for
the IPC, he still puts in as many hours as he ever did just driving the rest
of us, encouraging us, and steering us through the pitfalls of our own
ideas! I have never seen Gary in a sour mood and it is impossible to be
discouraged in the face of his optimism!
Jim Yohe is a former Vice-Chairman of the DC and has put forth an
immeasurable amount of effort to further ideas for the rest of us. He has
spent countless hours researching things and drawing up documentaion. He
keeps us legit, and gives us a clarity of thinking.
I can't think of anyone who has worked harder for their 'fellows' than Bill
Brooks and Glenn Wells. These guys have done whatever it took to help people
learn and get certified for the betterment of their own careers. Both have
spent countless hours helping their chapters start and continue. They ALSO
both worked to set up and teach a curriculem at community colleges to train
the people who want to come into this career and don't know how to begin.
Rainer Thueringer is a professor from Germany who spends his time and
efforts translating IPC standards, DC cocumentation and teaching in his own
country. He is also the current driver for some of the Focus Modules that
will raise the level of understanding that all designers can certify to.
Paul Fleming has brought a different light to us from the software
community. He works hard to encourage his company (Mentor) to help designers
who are having difficulty and brings new ideas and support to the meetings.
He has also started a chapter in his area and works tirelessly for that.
There are others... and I apologize for not mentioning every one
individually. But if you have read this far, I hope you have a different
perspective as to what it means to have this thing called the Designer's
Council working for you... a lot of time, effort, patience, and perseverence
by a LOT of people. And those who run it.... are designers just like you! So
next time you see or talk to one of these people, you might say thanks for
all your efforts!
All of the people I mentioned (and more) have had a huge impact on my career
and I THANK you all!
