With a certain make of contamination tester whose name shall not be
mentioned, an estimation of the surface area of the components was made
by measuring the volume of solution displaced and subtracting the volume
of the bare board. The ratio between the volume of the components and
their surface area was reasonably constant, if taken over a mix of
packages. This was sufficiently accurate (usually within ±5-10%) on
condition that there were no large components such as power Xformers or
large Al elcos. Of course, even though this was done automatically (the
volume displaced fell over a weir and was measured electrically), the
user had the option to use it or not.
