Robert,
Save yourself the trip to the insane asylum and don't attempt this.  I have
tried this before and in our high mix environment it is near impossible.
We seem to have an aversion to nice square boards.  The only reason I can
see for doing this is if you are making millions of the same board.

It is an accepted practice to use the surface area of the circuit board,
plus about 10% to account for components.  And yes, it is arbitrary, and
yes, it may not reflect reality.  I did not invent the practice, just use
it.    And don't try to calculate the surface area of through holes or vias
either.

Hi T'netters;
Is anyone aware of a program that calculates the surface area of
components so I can more accurately determine the surface area of PCB
assemblies?
