Hi Cheryl,

We have a similar requirement currently in-process that we are completing
for a customer. We are using a precision drill system with a drill to ream
the holes and remove the majority of the solder to allow the press fit pins
to be inserted. It does require investigating the board design to confirm
the original hole drill size, and the plated hole wall thickness. Give me a
call if you'd like to discuss further.

hi,

i don't know the exact conditions of your pwb, but might it not be possible
to run it through a solder dip and hot air leveling operation?

Subject: [TN] Removing solder from PTH barrels

Does anyone have any clever suggestions on how to get solder (all of it)
out of .024" diameter PTH barrels?

The barrels are supposed to be completely clear of solder since they are
used for a press-fit connector. There is just enough solder in the holes
to keep the connectors from seating properly. The barrels ended up with
solder paste in them after some boards were run using the wrong stencil.
The operator wiped the boards by hand towards the holes forcing some
solder paste into the barrels. He didn't follow up with a clean either.

While I'm at it, does anyone have a really good process for cleaning
misprinted boards? Obviously, our current procedure wasn't followed but
maybe someone has a better way.

Thanks, Cheryl
