Thanks,

But for our purposes, we would consider using such a tool to help our
incoming materials screen for SAC alloy BGA's and the like that are not
always labeled as such. It is better to know before you put them on the
line what you are dealing with! As well, it is a helpful aid to ensure
that your touch up people are using the proper alloy - we don't want any
mishaps!

I certainly wouldn't want to rely on a swab test to ensure 100% compliance,
but such a device does have its merits.

As for determining what finish is on each material, such as components and
PCB's, a little research can go a long way. Most component manufacturers
are now posting general information on their websites that a simple follow
up call can confirm. Since we are a contract manufacturer, I realize that
this is a big task, but not by any means impossible. For an OEM with a few
products, most of which share the same family of components and/or
manufacturers, the list would be much shorter.

Of course, some will still prefer to use their trusty tools of the trade at
considerable cost to their companies, and that is certainly their
prerogative. OEMs have a much bigger burden that EMS companies, so perhaps
the caution is not unfounded.

Hi Danielle & IPC LF Listservers,

A quick note.

Don't trust these kind of items too much, or the people that tell you they
are dynamite down to .1% or less, since they reply on the element lead
being available at the surface that you touch.

Yours in Engineering, Dave

P.S. Back I go to read onward on the Thunderstorm Canadian Bev
created/fostered.
