We had much the same experience with FABs in Taiwan.  The samples and even
the first run or two were great.  Much back-slapping in the purchasing
department.  You can guess what happened next.  We wound up getting a quick
turn domestically $$$.  Communicating with the vendor through the local
broker/sales office was like a bad game of "telephone".
Purchasing's next adventure was sourcing an Asian Euro Connector that was
"exactly the same".
Live but don't learn.

I can only add that the ocean is much wider than you might think...

We had a bad experience with a Taiwan connector supplier that presented us
with a significant savings in the price quote and the samples looked good,
but when the delivery happened, the 1,000's of parts were all rejected for
bad plating and poor workmanship. This caused us serious delays in being
able to provide our products to OUR customers on time... we had to wait many
weeks while they re-did the parts... not acceptable. In the end it cost us
way more than what we had hoped to have saved. I would advise extreme
caution in traveling down that road... Now, I like to be able to reach out
and touch the vendors that supply us... and not have to take a 15 hour
flight to get there and not be able to speak the language, etc...etc.. or be
duped by a motivated broker...

There are always hidden costs in going with the lowest bidder. Count on it.

Rejects, communications, design issues, acceptability criteria, time to
replace parts, etc.  Make sure you visit the company and cultivate a
relationship with someone fitting your needs.  If you use a broker you
will have issues and variations in board performance.  Seek out (takes
sometime) and stick to one good supplier - get a good customs agent.

Hi all-

Purchasing has decided they would like to entertain off shore (Asia)
quotes for bare boards and compare them with our domestic prices. It is
obvious to me that the cheaper of the two is the direction they will
proceed.

Aside from raw cost of the board alone....what other variables need to
be considered (i.e. import cost, tax, etc...).

Any experiences or input you may have would be great.
