Dear Chris

Its a great story but it seems that the book is just repeating the rumour about Napoleons buttons and tin pest without any kind of reference. We have been looking into the story for a little while and there several factors that make it almost impossible to believe......I hope that we will be able to write an article about it one day.

There were some other reasons that the army might not have had all their buttons..... for example, it was reported that soldiers frequently cut them off to use them as currency in local taverns!

best wishes
Kay

As related in the new book Napoleon's Button - see Amazon................

The French during the Napoleonic Wars used tin buttons. The Grand Armée that marched into Russia in 1812 had tin buttons. Apparently tin turns to powder at temperatures below 56°F. Certainly that did nothing to assist the French on their retreat from Moscow. [Le Couteur and Burreson]

Chris

Just a thought:

Has anyone heard the story of Napoleon's army and their buttons? The story goes that after a long and brutal winter all of their shiny buttons disintegrated. They were 100% tin . . .

Could be just a story!

Speaking of Polar explorers...
If you pop along to Antarctica you will be able to see the real solid tin cans ( not tinned steel) that Scott and Shackleton left behind are still there, tin shaped and sound and definitely not a little pile of dust. In addition the last time that one was opened the contents were perfectly OK. These of course have been subjected to nearly one hundred years of the conditions that supposedly cause tin pest. Just a thought.

Mike

Wouldn't that be a story:

"A team of Antarctic researchers investigating effects of electronics manufacturing on the ozone layer were stranded today when their GPS system malfunctioned. The malfunction is thought to be associated with the removal of lead from the solder"..................8-)

Hi Jim, Tyco-Bob, Jean-Paul, and IPC LF Listservers,

<Thank you for your response. Like many other issues in this Lead-Free transition, it sounds as if "tin pest" has been overblown.>

I am not sure YET that the issue is overblown. I believe that based on the environments of certain products or certain product life conditions that we may see this selectively in real life applications. In June Tin's KayN
(Soldertec) did respond to us that ITRI has not seen any effect and privately others have also written to me that they have yet to see any effect.

My first guess is product that has to survive continual cold temperatures like in the Artic or in refrigerator/freezers where -40C/-40F is common or in other applications like thermoelectric coolers.

As for a nucleation site for the transformation to get started, I am less clear of how that all happens. More Study, or the Luck of being an IPC LF Listserver is needed.

If you look at the UK's Open University Report it seems obvious that we will see this under certain conditions. The sample just had too too much Tin Pest to be a coincidence.

Yours in Engineering, Dave
