There are a few candidates I would suggest we consider for awards, who to
my
knowledge have benefited the designer community and also through their
efforts have improved the printed circuit manufacturing world through the
spreading of better design knowledge, practices and techniques.

One - PCD&M magazine staff and contributing writers have performed
unmatched
service to the PCB industry, both Designers and Manufacturers have
benefited
from the tireless energy and effort provided by their witty and informed
group. PCB East and West have brought designers and educators and PCB
vendors together in a spirit of competition, improvement, and striving for
excellence in the Printed Circuit Industry. Many of the contributing
writers
and readers are IPC DC members and I'm sure there is not one among you who
has not benefited from their magazine and shows. I believe they should be
recognized for that effort and benefit to the PCB Industry.

Two - More designers that I can count have benefited from the efforts of
Mary Sugden and her Copper Connection Design Education facility in Santa
Clara/San Jose California. They carry her courses back to their jobs and
apply the information in the industry and all manufactures who deal with
designs appreciate the good design practices that are instilled in the
designs that those designers make. Better yields, better assembly, and more
profitable products all come from good education.
Since Mary's operation closed, I believe Premiere has taken over in Santa
Clara where Mary had paved the way, and no finer group of educators could
carry the torch for design education here in the U.S.
Premiere has been training in Europe for many years and their efforts have
not gone unnoticed. Alan and Phil have done a terrific job on making sure
the design community gets the information it needs to get the job done
right.

Third - I think there are many examples of extra ordinary individuals who
have benefited others selflessly over the years, and one favorite of mine,
who inspired me personally, was Rick Hartley. Rick encouraged me to get
involved, to step outside my personal work world and attempt to help make a
difference for someone other than myself and my family. Rick gives of his
time and knowledge and inspiration freely and liberally to all he comes in
contact with. His years of speaking before crowds of PCB designers,
teaching
us ways to better our designs, and ways to improve our careers can never be
honored enough.

And last - but not least - there are a group of designers who carry the
bulk
of the load and provide leadership for us all through their volunteer
efforts for the Designers Council... Glenn Wells, Suzy Webb, Andy
Kowalewski, Gary Ferrari, Alan Johnson, Dieter Bergman, and Jim Yohe, just
to mention a few.

All have every qualification for recognition and should get an award for
their efforts.

At least, that's my opinion for what it's worth... :)

If there is some form we have to fill out to get them considered for an
award, please send me a link and I will gladly fill it out. Let us know.
Also if there have been previous award winners, could we get them published
somewhere like on the DC website?

Best regards,

Bill Brooks

Subject: [DC] Recognition for the Deserving

Recognition for the Deserving
IPC and the industry owe so much to the many volunteers who contribute
to IPC activities and standards development. This year's IPCWorks and
October Management Meetings will offer a timely opportunity to recognize
those who have gone above and beyond.

You can acknowledge the excellence and commitment of deserving
individuals by nominating them for IPC President's, IPC Distinguished
Committee Service and IPC Special Recognition awards.

Recipients will be honored at IPCWorks 2004, taking place October 24-27
in Minneapolis, Minn., and at the Management Programs in October in
Arizona.

The President's Award is given to members who have exhibited ongoing
leadership in IPC and have made significant contributions to the
association and the electronic interconnect industry. Individuals can
receive this award only once.

The Distinguished Committee Service Award is presented to an IPC
committee members who has made an exceptional contribution to a specific
standard or other IPC program. Any person who is actively involved on an
IPC committee is eligible, except members of the board of directors.
This award can be presented to an individual more than once.

The Special Recognition Award is given to members who have made
exceptional contributions to an IPC program or to the industry. The
activity can be a short-term or a one-time event. This award can also be
received more than once.

Nominations must include the name and company of the candidate and a
statement describing how the nominee meets award criteria, what the
contribution was or why the member deserves recognition. All nominations
are confidential. Self-nominations are welcome.

Submit nominations to Susan Storck ([log in to unmask]) membership and
